Zain Islam-Hashmi | Maker

I am a recent graduate of Carnegie Mellon University's Bachelor of Architecture program with minors in Intelligent Environments and Architectural Design Fabrication. Raised in the rural farmlands of Central New Jersey, I am a first-generation Pakistani-American passionate about research, fabrication, materiality and creating memorable experiences.

Throughout my career, I have gravitated towards fabrication and experimenting ways in which people and materials interact.  I view myself as a maker and choose to create from a broad range of domains and from a wide variety of materials. I seek to deepen the relationship people, environment, and materials have with one another through aspects of engagement, collaboration, and play. I value the hands-on process of making and look to join environments where I can learn new skills, trades, techniques and ways of working from others.  From making furniture pieces and garments to the design-build of structures and installations, I believe design goes beyond building environments to creating memories for people.

With a basis in the architecture field, my interests and experiences have led me to intersect with other fields such as industrial design, curation, fashion and production.  By learning and working across a range of disciplines and materials, I aim to push the interactions and experiences possible between people, design, and the spaces they inhabit.

When I am not making or galavanting across the world, you can find me home in New Jersey reading, watching foreign films, taking photos on disposable cameras, or eating any dessert or spicy food that I can get my hands on.
